English for Italians and Vice Versa!

Please excuse my prolonged absence…I’ve been very busy at work, and my husband and I are also renovating our house. I haven’t had the free time to update this blog, nor to speak to my Italian friends. I haven’t spoken Italian for over a year, let alone visited Italy, and as a consequence my Italian is really rusty…

I haven’t abandoned my Italian totally, however. I’m able to listen to the radio and to Italian audiobooks whilst I’m driving, and so I try to listen to some Italian every day. Compared with English, there aren’t many Italian audiobooks yet and it can be a little difficult to find them, and they’re also quite expensive. However, through iTunes I’ve managed to find some good books at lower prices, for example:

La Luna di Carta by Andrea Camilleri for £10.95 (5 hrs 50 mins)
Dracula by Bram Stoker for £6.95 (2 hrs 59 mins)....fantastic!
The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson for £6.95 (2 hrs 4 mins)
Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne for £8.95 (7 hrs 30 mins)
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson for £14.95 (7 hrs 32 mins)
Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift for £8.95 (10 hrs 12 mins)
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte for £8.95 (14 hrs 22 mins)...and for bargain hunters:
The Pickwick Papers (unabridged) by Charles Dickens for £2.95 (39 hrs 18 mins)!

In my opinion, the latter is a rather difficult and boring book to read in its original English, let alone in Italian…but as a source of almost forty hours of Italian for only £2.95 it’s a real bargain, despite the narrator’s rather annoying voice!

How lucky you Italians are! There are thousands of English audiobooks, and many of them are available for free on the internet. You can download them via iTunes (for example, all the Librivox podcasts), and listen to them for hours and hours…and there are also sites like Audible.co.uk, with lots of new and popular titles. I’m a little jealous…

Scusatemi la mia assenza protratta...sono stata molto impegnata a lavoro, ed anche io e mio marito stiamo ristrutturando la casa. Non ho avuto il tempo libero né per aggiornare questo blog, né per parlare con i miei amici italiani. Non ho parlato italiano da più di un anno, figuriamoci fatta una visita in Italia, e di conseguenza il mio italiano è molto arrugginito...

Non ho abbandonato il mio italiano totalmente, però. Posso ascoltare la radio quando sto guidando, e anche i audiolibri italiani, e così provo a sentire un po' della lingua ogni giorno. Diversamenta da Inglese, finora non ci sono molti audiolibri italiani, ed è un po' difficile trovarli...e sono abbastanza cari. Però, sul sito iTunes ho trovato qualche buon libro a un basso prezzo...per esempio:

Secondo me, l'ultimo è un libro piuttosto difficile e noioso in inglese, figuriamoci in italiano...ma come un fonte di quasi quarante ore d'italiano per solo £2.95 è un vero affare, sebbene la voce della narratrice sia un po' irritante!

Come sieti fortunati, voi italiani! Ci sono migliaia di audiolibri inglesi, di cui molti sono gratis sul internet. Potete scaricarli via iTunes (per esempio tutti i podcast di Librivox) ed ascoltarli per ore e ore...e ci sono anche sitiweb come Audible.co.uk, con molti titoli nuovi e popolari. Sono un po' invidiosa....

When I first started reading Italian books a year or so ago, I set the bar way too high for myself. I figured I should be reading stuff like Dante’s Inferno or Boccaccio’s The Decameron, and it took me a while (and a fair share of demoralisation) to realise that that this was far too challenging a task for a beginner.

So, I set my sights a little lower, and started reading less challenging material, and that’s when I stumbled across Italian crime novels.

In England and America it’s customary for highbrows to turn their noses up at so-called ‘genre’ novels, i.e. those novels that can be slotted into a specific category such as thriller, sci-fi, horror, romance, crime, western, legal, historical and erotica.

Certainly, when I was an English undergraduate twenty years ago, we rarefied students never sullied our fingers by turning the pages of anything other than a timeless classic of English, American or European literature such as War and Peace or Great Expectations, or the modern ‘literary novel’ equivalent written by a lion of contemporary literature such as Salman Rushdie or JM Coetzee.

However, for language students there’s a lot to be said for reading genre novels to develop a familiarity for your target language. For starters, genre novels (especially those in the thriller, horror and crime genres) tend to use language that is more contemporary, accessible and colloquial than classic or literary novels, so readers run less risk of learning outdated and obsolete words and expressions. Also, given that prolific genre authors often publish a new novel every year or 18 months, their novels tend to be rooted in the here-and-now, with topical plot lines adding colour and verisimilitude to the work. This immediacy is fascinating for the foreign reader.

And this brings me to Quo Vadis, Baby by Grazia Verasani, which I finished reading this morning. This novel is a perfect example of what I’m talking about above. The language is accessible, the plot is intriguing, and the characters do normal, everyday things like smoke, drink, make love, fight, get drunk, fall down, cook dinner for their friends and argue with their parents. In a nutshell, the book was a joy to read from the first word to the last and I heartily recommend it to students of Italian everywhere! I’ve just bought another of Verasani’s books, called ‘Tutto Il Freddi Che Ho Preso’, and I can’t wait to start reading it!

Quando ho cominciato a leggere i libri italiani un anno fa, ho chiesto troppo di me stessa. Ho pensato che dovrei leggere i libri come Purgatorio di Dante o Il Decameron di Boccaccio, e ha voluto un po’ di tempo (e un sacco di demoralizzazione) di rendermi conto che questo fosse un compito troppo difficile per una principiante.

Quindo, ho ridotto le mie aspettative, e ho cominciato a leggere il materiale meno ambizioso, ed a questo punto mi sono imbattuta nei gialli italiani.

In Inghileterra e negli Stati Uniti, è consuetudine per gli intellettuali di sdegnano i cosiddetto ‘romanzi a tema’, cioè quei romanzi che possono essere inclusi nell’una categoria discreta come thriller, fantascienza, orrore, romanzi rosa, gialli, western, legale, storico e erotica.

Certamente, quando ero una studentessa universitaria venti anni fa, noi studenti rerefatti non infangavamo mai le dita girare le pagine dei libri che non sono stati classici eterni delle letterature Inglese, Americana e Europea come ‘Guerra e Pace’ o Grandi Speranzi’, o invece l’equivalente moderno di uno scrittore di grande reputazione come Salman Rushdie o JM Coetzee.

Comunque, per gli studenti delle lingue, i libri a tema hanno un buon vantaggio, perché aiutono i lettori di sviluppare una familiarità per la lingua d’arrivo. Tanto per cominciare, i romanzi a tema (soprattutto quei della categorie thriller, orrore e crime) tendono a usare un linguaggio più contemporaneo, avvicinibile e colloquiale che i classici o i libri letterari, e quindi è meno probabile che i lettori imparino le parole e le espressioni obsolete. Anche, dato che spesso gli scrittori a tema pubblichino un nuovo romanzo ogni anno o diciotto mesi, i loro libri tendono essere radicati nel presente, con le trame d’attualità che aggiungiono colore e verosimiglianza al libro. Questa immediatezza è molto affascinante per un lettore straniero.

E questo mi porta al libro ‘Quo Vadis, Baby’ di Grazia Verasani, che ho finito stammatina. Questo romanzo è un esempio perfetto delle cose di cui ho parlato qui sopra. Il linguaggio è avvicinibile, la trama è intrigante, ed i personnaggi facciono le cose normali, come fumare, bere, fare l’amore, lottare, ubriacarsi, cadere, cucinare la cena per gli amici e littigare con i suoi. In parole povere, questo libro era una fonte di gioia dalla prima all’ultima parola, e lo raccomando a tutti gli studenti d’italiano! Ho appena comprato un altro libro di Verasani che si chiama ‘Tutto Il Freddi Che Ho Preso’, e non vedo l’ora di leggerlo!

Total Immersion / Immersione totale

I’m lucky enough to visit Italy at least 2 or 3 times a year, for up to 14 days at time, but this is still not the same as actually living there and immersing myself in the language and culture.

However, even in England I try to immerse myself in Italian as much as I can. I listen to Italian radio podcasts on my iPod, I read online Italian newspapers, I read Italian blogs and Italian novels and – whenever it’s possible – I change all my user interfaces to Italian.

What do I mean by ‘change my user interfaces’? Well, I mean that I change the language settings of things like my mobile phone, by iPod, my DVD player and my Sky receiver from English to Italian, so that all of the menus, functions, alerts, commands and notices are in Italian rather than in my native tongue. This gets me used to Italian words for things that I see everyday in English, such as settings (impostazioni), friends (amici), check mail (controlla la posta), edit (modifica), subscribe/join (iscriviti), search (ricerca), insert password (inserisci il codice), try again (riprova), invalid code (codice non valido), photos (immagini), calculator (calcolatrice), contacts (contatti), reset (ripristina) etc etc.

It’s amazing how seeing these words every day makes you remember them without any effort, almost by a sort of osmosis.

This option is also available in many of the social networking websites such as Facebook, Myspace, YouTube, Google, GoogleReader, iTalki, Word Reference, Shared Talk etc, so that all of the administrative functions and welcome messages etc. can be switched from English to Italian.

Using Shared Talk as an example, the welcome message to new members in English is as follows:

Shared Talk is a community of people from all around the world and is dedicated to language exchange and language learning. We are working to provide you with the best tools that can easily help you learn and practice foreign languages. Shared Talk is willing to offer help and tools to learn and practice foreign languages. It is mainly based on language exchange and is founded on its community. This same message, when using the Italian interface, reads:

So what else do I do to introduce as much Italian as possible into my daily life?

Well, I’m not sure that this is the same in every country, but certainly in England if you buy any electrical or electronic item it arrives accompanied by an instruction booklet about 100 pages thick, of which only 2 pages are written in English, and all the rest are in every language under the sun, from Arabic to Yiddish. Before I started learning Italian I’d automatically read the English pages, but now I immediately turn to the Italian pages and see whether I can understand everything in Italian first, before I then turn to my native language to check my understanding.

In fact, if there’s Italian writing anywhere on the packaging of anything I buy, I read that first, and only turn to the English version to clarify my comprehension.

And good quality English language Italian cookbooks can also be a treasure trove of Italian culinary expressions, food related words etc…even if the recipe is written completely in English, often at least the title of the dish is written in both English and Italian…absorbing these can be a great help when ordering from an Italian menu when you’re actually in Italy….

Sono abbastanza fortunata di fare almeno due, tre visità in Italia ogni anno, per forse quattordici giorni alla volta, ma questo non è la stessa cosa come vivere nel paese, e immergermi nella lingua e nella cultura.

Comunque, anche in Inghilterra provo ad immergermi in Italiano il più possibile. Ascolto la radio italiano sulla mio iPod, leggo i giornali italiani sulla rete, leggo i blog ed i romanzi italiani e – dovunque sia possibile – cambio tutte le mie interfaccie di utente nel italiano.

Cosa significa ‘cambio le mie interfaccie di utente’? Be’, voglio dire che cambio le impostazioni linguistiche delle cose come il mio cellulare, il iPod, il DVD player ed il ricevitore Sky dal inglese in italiano, così che tutti i menu, le funzioni, i segnali d’allarme, i comandi, e gli avvisi sono in italiano piuttosto che nella mia propria lingua. Questo mi fa ferrata con le parole italiane per le cose che visto ogni giorno in inglese, come settings (impostazioni), friends (amici), check mail (controlla la posta), edit (modifica), subscribe/join (iscriviti), search (ricerca), insert password (inserisci il codice), try again (riprova), invalid code (codice non valido), photos (immagini), calculator (calcolatrice), contacts (contatti), reset (ripristina) ecc ecc.

È sorprendente che semplicemente vedere queste parole ogni giorno mi fa ricordarle senza sforzo, quasi per osmosi.

Questa facilità è anche disponibile in molti siti per interazione sociale come Facebook, Myspace, YouTube, Google, GoogleReader, iTalki, Word Reference, Shared Talk ecc., dove è possibile cambiare tutte le funzioni amministrative ed i messaggi di benvenuto dal inglese in italiano.

Allora, faccio qualcos’altra per introdurre italiano il più possibile nella mia vita quotidiana?

Be’, non sono sicura che ogni paese è lo stesso, ma certamente in Inghilterra se si compra qualche prodotto elettrico o elettronico, arriva con un opuscolo di istruzioni di quasi cento pagine, di cui solo due sono scritte in inglese, ed il resto è scritto in ogni lingua sotto il sole, da arabo a Yiddish. Prima di iniziare i miei studi d’italiano, leggevo automaticamente le pagine inglesi, ma adesso leggo subito le pagine italiane per scoprire se posso capire tutto, prima di controllare la mia comprensione con la mia lingua nativa.

Infatti, se c’è un po’ di scritta italiana sulla confezione di qualsiasi cosa che compro, la leggo primo, e mi giro alla versione inglese per chiarire la mia comprensione.

E per finire, un libro di cucina italiana scritto in inglese può essere una cassa del tesoro delle espressioni italiane culinarie, le parole collegate al cibo ecc ecc. Nonostante che le ricette siano scritte totalmente in inglese, spesso almeno i titoli siano scritti in inglese ed italiano. E questi possono essere molto utili quando si trova in un ristorante in Italia….

Random ramblings about Italian films and books

Hi everyone. This is a photo of my Italian DVD collection...

And this is a photo of my collection of Italian books...

Given that it takes me around 2 weeks to read each book, I think I've practically enough material to last me a year! I've bought all of my DVDs from the Italian section at Amazon.co.uk, where there's a pretty good choice at decent prices, and I buy all of my books either in person when I go to Rome (I have very heavy hand luggage!) or through IBS.it, where the quality of service and delivery to England is always wonderful.

It IS possible to watch Italian films free on the internet if you go to Videogratis.com, but you need a high speed broadband connection to make it worthwhile. Otherwise, you're better off going to your local library and renting Italian DVDs, or saving your pennies and starting your own collection.

My local art house cinema shows the occasional Italian film too, and in the past year I've seen Gomorrah, Quiet Chaos and The Bicycle Thieves there, and I'm looking forward to seeing Paolo Sorrentino's Il Divo later this month. Sorrentino is my favourite Italian director (so far!) and his Consequences of Love is my favourite film (also so far). Italian cinema (at least the little of it that I've seen) is much more visual, thoughtful and multi-layered than the usual mainstream Hollywood fare, and I'm looking forward to deepening my acquaintance with it!

Dato che a me ci voglia due settimane per leggere un libro, credo che io abbia materiale sufficiente per un anno! Ho comprato tutti i DVD dalla sezione italiana a Amazon.co.uk, dove c'è un buon assortimento a prezzi ragionevoli, e compro tutti i miei libri o di persona quando sono a Roma (ho bagaglio a mano molto peso!) o alla libreria IBS.it, dove il servizio e la distribuzione nell'Inghilterra sono sempre di ottima qualità.

Certamente è possibile guardare i film italiani sul internet, se andate al sito Videogratis.com, ma non vale la pena se non avete una connessione a banda larga. Altrimenti, è meglio andare alla biblioteca e prendere in prestito i dvd italiani, o risparmiare i soldi per iniziare la propria collezione.

Ogni tanto il mio cinema d'arte di zona mette in sceno un film italiano, e durante l'anno scorso ho visto Gomorra, Caos Calmo e Ladri di Biciclette, e sto in attesa di guardare Il Divo di Paolo Sorrentino tra poco. Sorrentino è la mia registra preferita (fino ad adesso!), ed il suo Le Conseguenze dell'Amore è il mio film preferito (anche fino ad adesso!). Secondo me, il cinema italiano è più visivo, riflessivo ed in grado di comunicare su più livelli che il cinema di Hollywood, e non vedo l'ora di approfondirne la mia conoscenza.

English and Italian Idioms - I modi di dire inglesi e italiani

I received some bad news earlier this week, which may mean that I have less time available to update this blog. In order to gain something positive from the situation, I thought I'd explain it using as many English idioms as possible, and then see whether, when completing the translation, I can find an equivalent Italian idiom. It will be interesting to see whether I can recreate in Italian the colourful vibrancy that the idioms lend to the English original. I'll highlight the idioms in bold so that you can spot them easily

OK, I'll stop beating around the bush and cut to the chase. My mum was diagnosed with bowel cancer a while ago, and now she must have an operation to remove a large part of her intestines. At 80 years old she's no spring chicken, so I'm tearing my hair out with worry about her, and keeping my fingers crossed that things will come up roses. Though she's a bit long in the tooth she's also as tough as old boots, and she won't throw in the towel without a fight. She said that she has no intention of popping her clogs any time soon, and in no time she'll be as right as rain and as fit as a fiddle. Though she may feel like death warmed up for the first couple of days after the surgery, she'll soon be fighting fit again and champing at the bit to get home.

My dad has put on a brave face and is trying to look on the bright side. He says a few days in hospital will finally stop mum from rushing around like a headless chicken and force her to look after number one for a change. But we all know that getting mum to slow down will be easier said than done, because a leopard can't change its spots. Mum's old school. She believes that the devil makes work for idle hands, so she's always on the go. I hope she takes plenty of rest to recover her strength, but you can't teach an old dog new tricks, and trying to change her now will be like flogging a dead horse or talking to a brick wall. It goes against the grain for her to rest, so I guess dad and I will just have to bite our tongues and hope for the best.

Luckily my husband and I upped sticks and moved closer to my parents just before Christmas, so at least we'll be on the doorstep and able to lend a helping hand, if the going gets tough. I know that worrying is as much use as a chocolate teapot so I'm trying to be positive and keep a stiff upper lip...but it's not easy!

All'inizio della settimana ho ricevuto un po' di cattive notizie, le quali potrebbero significare che in futuro avrò meno tempo per aggiornare il blog. Per ottenere qualcosa di positivo dalla situazione, ho pensato di raccontare quello che è successo in questo post, usando tanti modi di dire inglesi come è possibile, e poi scoprire se quando faccio la traduzione, posso trovare l'equivalente modo di dire italiano. Sarà interessante per me scoprire se posso ricreare in italiano la stessa risonanza colorita che i modi di dire inglesi danno alla versione inglese. Evidenzio in grassetto i modi di dire per permettervi di trovarli facilmente.

Va bene, smetto di fare un giro di parole e vado al dunque. Un po' di tempo fa, a mia madre è stato diagnosticato un cancro all' intestino, ed ora deve operarsi per togliere un grande quantità di viscere. Lei ha ottanta anni e comunque non è più tanto giovane, quindi mi sto strappando i capelli per la preoccupazione, e tocco ferro che le cose riescano nel migliore dei modi. Sebbene lei sia un po' attempata, è anche dura come una suola di scarpa, e non getterà la spugna senza lottare. Ha detto che non ha nessuna intenzione di tirare le cuoia, e tra poco si sentirà in forma di nuovo, e starà mordendo il freno per tornare a casa.

Mio padre mostra un sorriso impavido e sta provando a vedere il lato positivo della situazione. Mi dice che qualche giorno in ospedale la fermeranno dal correre come un gallina senza testa e la costringeranno a prendersi cura di se stessa tanto per cambiare. Ma riconosciamo che costringerela a rallentare è una cosa più facile a dirsi che a farsi, perché il lupo cambia il pelo ma non il vizio. Mia mamma è di vecchio stampo. Crede che l'ozio sia il padre di tutti i vizi, quindi lei non si ferma mai. Spero che si riposi per ricuperare le forze, ma asini vecchi non apprendono latino. Tentando di cambiarla adesso non sarà altro che un spreco d'energia, e come battere la testa contro un muro. Riposarsi è contrario alle sue reazione istintive, quindi credo che mio padre ed io dobbiamo morderci la lingua e sperare per il meglio.

Per fortuna mio marito ed io ci siamo trasferiti più vicini ai miei un po' prima di natale, comunque saremo almeno proprio sotto casa per aiutarli se le cose diventeranno difficili. So che la preoccupazione è così inutile come una teiera fatta di cioccolato, quindi sto provando ad essere positiva e tener duro…ma non è facile!

I'm Not Scared!

Hi, just a short post to tell students of Italian living in the UK that Film4 is showing the film I'm Not Scared (Io Non Ho Paura) on Saturday 17th January at 1.45am. This is a great modern film (my husband bought me the DVD for Christmas!) with dialogue that is relatively easy to follow (though Film 4 will obviously include Italian subtitles). One to enjoy!

Ciao, ecco un breve post per far sapere agli studenti d'italiano che abitono in inghilterra che Film4 manda in onda il film Io Non Ho Paura il sabato 17 gennaio alle due meno un quarto. Questo film è moderno e splendido (per caso mio marito melo ha regolato per natale!) con un dialogo abbastanza facile per noi studenti di capire (benché sul Film4 i sottotitoli in inglese siano presenti). Divertitevi!

Back to the drawing board!

My husband’s dad died on Thursday, so yesterday evening we went to his favourite restaurant to celebrate his life and to have a little wake in his honour. The restaurant is a tiny Italian trattoria, and I thought that maybe while we were dining I’d have the chance to practice my Italian a little…but actually it wasn’t as easy as I hoped!

I haven’t spoken a single word of Italian for almost 5 months, and the sentences seemed strange in my mouth. Although I received lots of compliments on my accent and my fluency from the waiters, I felt embarrassed and inarticulate the whole time that I was speaking. Desite being able to understand everything that was said to me, I felt totally uncomfortable.

Even when I used to speak regularly in Italian (every day for a year, on Skype) it was always difficult for me. I’m quite a shy woman and I invariably get tongue-tied when I’m nervous or uncomfortable. This sheds some light on why I was so relieved when I read that in language learning it’s initially more beneficial to listen and read (to improve vocabulary) rather than to speak and write (i.e. it’s better to concentrate on inputs rather than outputs).

Certainly there appears to be some truth in this, as it's essential to acquire the ability to understand the spoken language, and this comes predominantly from having encountered the words previously. But the ability to communicate one’s own ideas is also important. I’m not sure now that I made the right decision when I decided to quit speaking completely for a while.

It’s always difficult to decide the best way to learn a language. I have very little spare time, so I need to use what little I have in the most effective way possible. I guess I’ll have to have a re-think and find a more balanced way to move forwards. We have an expression for this in English – it’s called “going back to the drawing board”, and we use this idiom when we want to express our belief that we’ve set off on a wrong path, and need to regroup and reassess how to progress. So it’s back to the drawing board for me, and I hope I make better decisions in future!

Il papà di mio marito è morto giovedì, e quindi ieri sera siamo andati al suo ristorante preferito per festeggiare la sua vita e per fare una piccola veglia funebre per lui. Il ristorante è una piccolissima trattoria italiana, e ho pensato che mi desse un'opportunità di praticare il mio italiano …ma in realtà non è stato così facile!

Non ho parlato nemmeno una parola in italiano per quasi cinque mesi, e le frasi mi sono sembrate strane in bocca. Mentre parlavo, mi sentivo imbarazzata e inarticolata, nononstante i complimenti che ho ricevuto dai camerieri per il mio accento e la mia competenza. Non mi sono sentita affatto a mio agio, sebbene fossi in grado di capire tutto.

Anche quando parlavo regolarmente in italiano (ogni giorno per più di un anno, su Skype) mi era sempre difficile. Sono una donna piuttosto timida, e mi ammutolisco quando sono nervosa o scomoda. Ciò spiega perché ero così sollevata quando ho letto che per imparare una lingua, all'inizio è conveniente ascoltare e leggere (per aumentare il proprio vocabolario) piuttosto che parlare o scrivere, (cioè: concentrarsi sull'alimentazione non sulla produzione).

Senza dubbio questo consiglio ha un po’ di senso, perché è indispensabile acquisire l'abilità di capire la lingua parlata, e questo deriva soprattutto dall' aver precedentemente incontrato le parole. Ma, la capacità di esprimere le proprie idee è anche importante. Ora, non sono sicura se avevo ragione di smettere di parlare totalmente.

È sempre difficile decidere il modo migliore di imparare una lingua. Non ho molto tempo libero, e devo usare il tempo in modo efficace. Forse devo riesaminare la situazione, e trovare un modo più equilibrato per andare avanti. Noi inglesi abbiamo un modo di dire per esprimere questo, che è ‘going back to the drawing board’ (rifare tutto da capo). Usarlo per esprimere la nostra convinzione che siamo fuori strada, e ci dobbiamo riorganizzare di nuovo . Devo fare così, e spero che io faccia decisioni migliori in futuro!

Using Google to help with language learning

Do you use Google to help you with your language studies?

I do, and it can be really useful in many different language scenarios.

What do I mean by 'using Google?' Well, if I'm writing a post and I don't know how to construct my sentence properly, I often enter it into the Google.it search engine and count the number of results that appear on the screen. Then I do the same thing with an alternative sentence, and see how many hits I get with the second phrase. Usually I go with the numbers, and use the construction that has the highest number of hits.

I'll use an example to illustrate. If I type the phrase 'Devo provare di' into Google.it it brings up 2,600,000 results, but if I type the phrase 'Devo provare a' there are 6,600,000 results, which suggests that the correct preposition to use with the verb 'provare' is A.

Of course, as with any popular tool, it must be used with caution. If you go to Google.com and type 'If I were rich I'd be a lot happier' you get 182,000 results, but this figure leaps to 951,000 results if you type 'If I WAS rich I'd be a lot happier'. Which just goes to prove that we English speakers really are rubbish when it comes to using the subjunctive!

Usate Google per aiutarvi con i vostri studi della lingua? Faccio così, ed il sito posso essere molto utile in molti modi diversi. Cosa voglio dire di 'usare Google?' Beh, se sto provando a scrivere un post e non so come costruire la frase giusta, spesso l'inserisco in Google.it, e conto il numero dei risultati. Poi inserisco una frase alternativa, e faccio un altro conto, e di solito uso la frase che ha il più risultati.

Uso un esempio per illustrare. Se si scrive la frase 'devo provare DI' in Google.it, ci sono 2.600.000 risultati, ma se si scrive la frase 'devo provare A' ci sono 6.600.000 risultati, che suggerisce che la preposizione corretta di usare con il verbo 'provare' è A.

Naturalmente, insieme a qualsiasi strumento popolare, si deve usarlo con prudenza. Se andate a Google.com e inserite 'If I were rich I'd be a lot happier', trovete 182.000 risultati, ma crescono a 951,000 i risultati se inserite la frase alternativa 'If I WAS rich I'd be a lot happier'. Questo per dimostrare quanto sono incapaci gli inglesi di usare il congiuntivo!

I fear that this site will be much more useful to you than my blog and so you'll all desert me...but I guess that's OK if it helps you with your English studies!

Happy 2009 - and musings on colds, mimicry, rote learning and intelligent robots!

Happy 2009!

I’ve welcomed in the new year with a cold, and thinking about that got me thinking about the myriad different ways in which native speakers express themselves.

If someone asked me how I was feeling, I could tell them about my cold in one of half a dozen different ways.

I could go for the no-frills factual approach and simply reply: “I’ve got/I have a cold”

Or, depending on my relationship with the enquirer, I could add an adjective to spice things up a little: “I’ve got a slight/heavy/stinking/streaming/rotton/bastard of a cold.”

Or (being female) I could add a little dig at men by saying: “I’ve got a slight cold…but at least it’s not man flu!” (thus succinctly expressing the widely-held female viewpoint that men never think they have the common cold, but always complain of being stricken down by flu).

Alternatively, I could avoid the word ‘cold’ entirely and say “I’m a bit under the weather” or “a bit below par” or “a bit poorly”.

Or I could just describe my symptoms, by replying: “Oh, I’m a bit bunged up” or “Oh, my nose is a bit blocked at the moment” or something similar.

The reason I’m talking about this at all is that it illustrates just how many different ways native speakers can express essentially the same concept without even thinking about it. And, as a language student, I need to keep that in mind when I’m trying to express myself in Italian.

Many language students get hung up on trying to speak sentences exactly as they’ve been taught to say them by books or teachers. It’s a sure-fire way of sounding stilted and unnatural because native speakers simply don’t say things exactly the same way every single time they say them.

Learning any language by rote is doomed to fail because that’s simply not how native speakers learned the language as children. When you’re a child you begin by simply mimicking what you hear around you, and over time you develop an intuitive feel for what sounds right and what sounds wrong. Adult learners need to try to master a foreign language in the same way, starting off with mimicry and then developing that natural ‘feel’ for the language.

However, if you’re learning English and you’re not yet ready to take off the training wheels, I’ve found a great website for you (especially if you want to speak English with an American accent.) The website is called 365 ESL Short Stories, and it not only contains the 365 short stories of the title (each with an audio file and full transcript) but also has another section called Practice Speaking English with Intelligent Robots which provides students with multiple conversations covering many every-day scenarios. This is a really excellent resource, and I’m a little envious that I haven’t found anything similar for us students of Italian!

Ho accolto il nuovo anno con un raffreddore, e pensandoci mi ha fatto cogitare sui modi diversi in cui i nativi si esprimono.

Se qualcuno mi chieda come mi sento, potrei rispondere in molti modi differenti.

Per esempio, potrei semplicemente dire: “Ho un raffreddore!”

O, potrei aggiungere un aggettivo: “Ho un raffreddore mite/forte/puzzolente/con naso che cola ecc ecc.

O (essendo femminile) potrei tirare una frecciatina agli uomino, dicendo: “Ho un piccolo raffreddore, ma almeno non ho un ‘man flu’.” (Così esprimendo succintamente il diffuso femminile punto di visto che gli uomini non hanno mai un semplice raffreddore, ma hanno sempre l’influenza).

Come alternativa, potrei evitare completamente la parola ‘raffreddore’, e dire “Non mi sento un granché” o “non mi sento molto bene” ecc ecc.

O potrei semplicemente descrivere i miei sintomi così: “il naso sto bloccato” ecc.

I nativi esprimersi in modi diversi senza pensandoci, e come una studentessa della lingua, devo tenere questa cosa a mente quando sto provando a esprimermi in italiano.

Molti studenti provano a parlare le frasi in una maniera identica a quella che i i libri o gli insegnanti hanno prescritto. É un modo garantito di rendere il linguaggio dello studento artificioso ed innaturale, perché i nativi semplicemente non parlano così, e non si esprimono ogni volta nella stessa maniera.

Imparare una lingua meccanicamente è destinato ad affondare perché i nativi non hanno imparato la lingua così da bambini. Quando si è un bambino, si comincia con imitare le parole che si sente, e col tempo si sviluppa una facilità intuitiva per le frasi che sembrano giuste, e quelle che sembrano sbagliate. Gli allievi adulti devono provare a fare così, cominciando con la mimica e poi sviluppando quello talento per la lingua.

Comunque, se state imparando inglese e non vi sentite ancora in grado di togliere le rotelle, ho trovato un sito meraviglioso per voi (sopratutto se vi piace parlare inglese con un accento americano). Il sito si chiama 365 ESL Short Stories, e non solo contiene le 365 storie del titolo (ognuno con un file audio ed una trascrizione completa) ma anche ha una sezione che si chiama Practice Speaking English with Intelligent Robots, che contiene molte conversazioni sul diversi soggetti. Questa è veramente una risorsa fantastica, e mi sento un po’ invidia che non ho ancora trovato un sito simile per noi studenti d’italiano!

Happy New Year everyone!

Is it an Italian tradition to make new year’s resolutions? The English usually do (even if the resolutions never last very long). This year mine are: to study more Italian, and to take more exercise.

I read an article today called: Hardcore English Training: Ways To Speak English Like Native in 3 Months. Although in my opinion the author doesn’t sound like a native, his method is very similar to my own way of learning Italian. With all the resources of the internet, it’s possible to immerse oneself in one’s target language without ever leaving the house. We modern students really are blessed!

Nowadays I read only Italian newspapers and books, and listen only to Italian radio and Italian podcasts. Recently I’ve also started to make notes and lists in Italian, such as when I’m going shopping, and my intention is to think, speak and write more in Italian in the future.

Our last visit to Rome (back in November) was cancelled at the last minute (literally the last minute, as we were just about to board the plane!) because my husband was unwell. Therefore our next visit is to Italy is in March. I hope to be able to speak more fluently when we arrive!

È una tradizione italiana di fare buoni propositi per l’anno nuovo? Di solito gli inglese fanno così (anche se i propositi non durino a lungo). Quest’ anno i miei sono: studiare più l’italiano, e fare più moto.

Ho letto un articolo oggi con il titolo: Hardcore English Training: Modi di parlare inglese come un nativo entro tre mesi. Sebenne secondo me l’autore non sembri come un nativo inglese, il suo metodo rassomiglia molto il mio d’imparare l’italiano. Con tutti le risorse del internet, è possibile immergersi nella lingua d’arrivo senza andarsene dalla casa. Noi studenti moderni siamo molto fortunati!

Oggigiorno leggo solo i giornali ed i libri italiani, ascolto solo la radio italiana e i podcast italiani. Recentemente ho cominciato anche a scrivere appunti e liste anche in italiano, per esempio quando vado a fare la spesa, ma la intenzione è di pensare, parlare e scrivere più in italiano in futuro.

La nostra ultima visita a Roma (a novembre) era cancellata al ultimo momento (literalmente! Siamo stati per entrare nel aereo!) perché mio marito è stato male. Quindi la nostra prossima visita in Italia è marzo 2009. Spero di poter parlare più correntemente quando arriviamo!

Online bookstores, English language podcasts, and my idea for a new one!

Apologies for the lengthy absence, but my husband and I moved house two weeks before Christmas, and our broadband was only restored today! Almost 3 weeks without internet access (except on my iPhone) has been torture. Moving (after 15 years in the same house) was a huge upheaval (although unavoidable given my new job), but though it was a wrench to leave our beloved cottage after so many years at least we now live closer to my parents, and we finally have enough room to swing a cat.

I’m truly a child of the electronic age because the very first thing I unpacked after the move was my iMac, and being unable to get online was driving me crazy! I couldn’t download my regular podcasts or browse my favourite websites, and I felt as though I were marooned in the middle of the desert! For my husband it was easier…his priority is his music, so he simply unpacked his guitar and amp, plugged them in and was immediately happy.

Thankfully my husband gave me 10 Italian books for Christmas, so at least I had some Italian to read…He bought them online from the Italian bookstore IBS.it, and they took less than 72 hours to arrive, which was pretty impressive. I’ve ordered books from them before and received the same prompt service, so I now feel I can recommend this store to others with confidence.

Browsing the web this morning (ah, how lovely to be online again!) I stumbled across a couple of good audio websites for students of English. The first is China232.com and the second is British Council.org. The podcasts look pretty interesting.

Incidentally, I’m toying with the idea of doing an English language bi-weekly or monthly audio podcast with accompanying free magazine transcript (a little like Maxmondo, but for students of English). For the most part my blog attracts students of English rather than students of Italian, so I thought that this type of podcast could be useful. My intention is for each podcast to be around 15 minutes long, and for the (totally free) magazine to have a full transcript as well as some related exercises. What do you think? Let me know if you think it’s a good idea, and send me some suggestions for topics you’d like me to cover in the first few episodes.

Vi chiedo scusa per la mia lunghissima assenza, ma io e mio marito ci siamo trasferiti due settimane prima di natale, e il nostro broadband è restituito solo stamattina! Essere senza l’internet (tranne sul iPhone) per tre settimane è stato un tipo di tortura per me! Transferendoci (dopo 15 anni nella stessa casa) era un gran disturbo (sebbene fosse inevitabile dato il nuovo lavoro), ma sebbene fosse un passo difficile andarcene dalla nostra amata casetta almeno ora abitiamo più vicini ai miei, e finalmente abbiamo lo spazio sufficiente per rigirarci!

Sono veramente una bambina dall’età elettronica perché la prima cosa che ho disfatto dopo il trasloco era il iMac, e di non aver la capacità di usarlo mi ha fatto impazzire! Non potevo nè scaricare i miei podcast quotidiani nè visitare i miei siti preferiti. Mi sentivo come una persona abbandonata nel mezzo al deserto! Per mio marito era più facile...la sua priorità è la musica, quindi poteva semplicemente disfare la chitarra e l’amplificatore, connettere e diventare immediatemente contento.

Meno male lui mi ha regolato dieci libri scritti in italiano per il natale, quindi almeno potevo leggere un po’! Ha comprato i libri online dalla libreria italiana IBS.it, e hanno voluto meno di 72 ore per arrivare. Il livello di servizio è molto imponente. In passato ho comprato altri libri dal questa libreria ed anch’io ho ricevuto lo stesso alto livello di servizio, comunque ora mi sento in grado di raccomandare questo negozio con fiducia.

Navigando l’internet stamattina (ah, com’era soddisfacente di fare così!) ho trovato due buon audio siti per gli studenti d’inglese. Il primo è China232.com ed il secondo è British Council.org. I podcast mi sembrano molto interessanti.

A proposito, sto giocando con l’idea di fare un podcast in inglese ogni due settimane o ogni mese, accompagnato di una rivista online gratis con tutte le trascrizioni (un po’ come Maxmondo, ma per gli studenti d’inglese). In gran parte il mio blog attira gli studenti d’inglese, non gli studenti d’italiano, quindo ho pensato che un podcast di questo tipo possa essere utile per i miei visitatori. La mia intenzione è che ogni podcast dura per circa 15 minuti, e che la rivista (totalmente gratis) contiene una trascrizione completa ed anche qualche esercizio collegato. Cosa ne pensate? Fatemi sapere se pensate che sia una buona idea, e mandatemi qualche suggerimento per soggetti di includere nei primi due, tre episodi.

English and Italian Radio Stations and Podcasts

Several people have asked me to recommend an English radio station or radio podcast that they can listen to on a daily basis.

For beginners there are many audio files available on the BBC Learning English website, which are specifically tailored for students of English, and which will give listeners a gentle introduction to the English language.

However, for the more advanced students who are eager to cut their teeth on mainstream radio (ie shows aimed at native listeners), I would recommend that they start listening regularly to BBC Radio 4, which is a 24/7 talk radio station that specialises in news, current affairs and documentaries.

If you listen to this station regularly you’ll pick up the rhythms of natural English speech, and learn a lot about the UK at the same time. By and large the presenters have clear, well-modulated voices, and the shows are usually presented at a natural but not frenetic pace that students should be able to attune themselves to without much difficulty. There are dozens of different shows to choose from (covering politics, the environment, ethical and moral issues, health, education, travel, drama and literature, arts and entertainment etc), all of which are available as streaming webcasts or as downloadable podcasts that you can subscribe to via a feeder such as iTunes.

As for students of Italian seeking something similar? Well, personally I subscribe via iTunes to the daily podcasts from Repubblica TV, Radio Anch’io and SBS Radio (an Australian broadcaster), and supplement these with the weekly Marco Travaglio videocast called Passaparola, also available via iTunes.

I’m always on the lookout for new shows to listen to, so if any readers know of any other daily Italian language radio shows, please let me know!

Alcune persone mi hanno chiesto di raccomandare una stazione radio inglese o podcast radio inglese a cui possono ascoltare ogni giorno.

Per i principianti ci sono molti file audio disponibili sul sito BBC Learning English che sono adattati agli studenti d’inglese. Questi danno agli ascoltatori un’introduzione leggera alla lingua inglese.

Comunque, per gli studenti più avanzati che sono avidi ad ascoltare la radio tradizionale (cioè i programmi create per le madrelingua) raccomanderei il canale BBC Radio 4. Questo è una stazione ‘24/7 talk radio’, che si specializza in notizia, cronaca e documentari.

Se si ascolta regolarmente a questa stazione, si può far notare del linguaggio inglese naturale, e si può imparare molto del paese allo stesso tempo. In complesso i presentatori hanno le voci chiare e ben modulate, e di solito i programmi sono presentati in un ritmo naturale ma non frenetico con cui gli studenti potrebbero sintonizzarsi senza troppo difficoltà.
Ci sono programmi a dozzina dal cui fare una scelta (per esempio sulla politica, l’ambiento, gli argomenti etichi e morali, la salute, l’istruzione, viaggio, dramma e letteratura, l’arte e intrattenimento), e tutti sono disponibili in streaming o come i podcast che si può ottenere via un sito come iTunes.

Per quanto riguarda gli studenti d’italiano che stanno cercando una cosa simile? Beh, personalmente mi abbono via iTunes ai podcast quotidiani dal Rebubblica TV, Radio Anch’io e SBS Radio (un canale australiano), e supplemento questi con i videocast settimanale di Marco Travaglio che si chiama Passaparola (anche disponibile via iTunes).

Sto sempre cercando nuovi programmi di ascoltare, quindi se qualche lettore conosce altri programmi italiani quotidiani, per favore fammi sapere!

Italian Language films on Sky World Movies

If you live in England and have a Sky subscription (just the basic subscription, not the more expensive movie package) you can watch Italian films on the World Movies channel, which is Sky channel 331.

The channel is overwhelmingly dominated by French movies, but maybe once a fortnight they schedule an Italian film with English subtitles, and the films tend to be obscure ones that are almost unknown in England (and therefore fascinating to us students of Italian!). The two most recently shown movies were Sacred Heart (which I loved!) and the mystery movie called The Perfume of the Lady in Black, both of which were well worth watching.

Check out the channel and urge your friends to do the same – if their viewing figures improve they’re more likely to schedule Italian films in the future!

Se vivete in Inghilterra e avete un abbonamento per Sky (soltanto l’abbonamento base, non il più caro per guardare i film) potete guardare i film italiani sul canale 331, che si chiama World Movies.

Questo canale è tanto dominato dei film francesi, ma forse una volta la quindicina c’è un film italiano con i sottotitoli inglesi. I film tendono a essere quasi sconosciuti in Inghilterra (e quindi sono tanto interessanti per noi studenti d’italiano!) I due film che sono stati mostrati il più recentemente sono stati Il Cuore Sacro (che l’ho amato!) ed Il Profumo della signora in nero, e tutti e due sono stati ben interessanti!

Guardate il canale e tentate a incorragiare i vostri amici a fare la stessa – se c’è un miglioramento nei numeri di spettatori è più probabile che il canale mostri più film italiani in futuro!

Hi everyone! Is there anyone out there who has an iPod Touch or an iPhone 3G? If so, I’ve just stumbled across a brilliant new application that I’m hoping will really help me with my Italian studies!

I’ve been reading a lot of Italian books lately (at least 100 pages each day) and I’ve realised two things.

Firstly, my reading pace has improved greatly, and I’m now reading almost as quickly in Italian as I do in English, and I rarely need to look up words or expressions in the dictionary.

However, although I recognise more and more words when I see them written down on the page, my overall vocabulary hasn’t really improved very much at all.

If I hear one of my newly learnt Italian words or expressions spoken (e.g. on a radio programme) I can usually recognise it and remember what it means, but this isn’t true for when I’m trying to remember the word from scratch, such as when I’m speaking or writing in Italian. Without the Italian words written down in front of me (preferably with some context to illuminate their meaning) I can rarely remember what they are! It’s as though they’ve been sucked into some big black hole, never to be seen again!

I’ll use the verb ‘trattenersi’ to illustrate what I mean. When I’m reading this word I can gather from the context that it means to hold oneself back or to exercise one’s self-restraint in some way, but if I’m speaking Italian and I want to say something like: “Oh yeah, that guy made me so mad! I really had to hold myself back so that I didn’t say something I’d regret…” I simply can’t think of the word for ‘hold myself back’. I think to myself: ‘Now I KNOW there’s a verb that means to hold oneself back, but what the hell is it?’, and my mind is usually a complete blank!

It’s incredibly frustrating and demoralising!

So this weekend I decided to do something to remedy the problem! Obviously the issue is that I’m reading or hearing the words but that I’m not really learning them! They’re going in one ear and out of the other, and only 1 in 50 is actually lodging in my memory banks. Patently just reading and listening to podcasts isn’t enough to make the words stick…I need to actively try to learn them by rote (something that I was hoping to avoid doing, since I was hoping my vocabulary would improve organically by osmosis and repetition!)

Writing lists of words in a notebook to learn by heart doesn’t really work for me since I have the attention span of a gnat, so I tried to find a more interesting approach. I stumbled across a website called WorkLifeStudy.com, which has a flash card application that you can download for free onto an iPhone or iPod Touch. The application is incredibly easy to use, and it’s absolutely brilliant for language learners! You can create your own sets of flash cards on your Mac or PC, and upload them immediately onto your iPhone or Touch, then review them whenever you have a spare few minutes. I have a huge backlog of words to learn so yesterday I created 28 separate sets of flashcards (each set containing 25 cards) and uploaded them onto my iPhone, and my plan is to thoroughly learn 50 words/expressions a day, so that by the end of a fortnight I’ll have cleared my backlog and can start reading books again to generate some new words and expressions.

If you use the smallest font, there is enough room on each side of the flashcard for around 790 characters (including spaces), giving you the ability to create flashcards with several sample sentences to illustrate how the words appear in context, or to import entire portions of text. As an example of this, the site illustrates how the full text of Lincoln’s Gettysburg address fits onto two sides of a single flashcard. Pretty impressive, huh?

I’ll try to use the cards consistently for a fortnight and give you an honest appraisal of my progress…but judging from first impressions this seems like a really useful application!

If you don’t have an iPhone or an iPod Touch there are other desktop-based applications that do the same sort of thing. One of these is called Supermemo, and you can read a review of the system here. Unfortunately I can’t use Supermemo as it’s not Mac-compatible, but it too sounds like a pretty good product.

Ciao a tutti! Avete un iPod Touch o un iPhone 3G? Ho appena trovato un’applicazione meravigliosa, e spero che mi aiuti con il mio italiano.

Recentemente stavo leggendo molti libri italiani (almeno cento pagini ogni giorno) e mi reso conto di due cose.

Quando leggo i libri italiani la mia velocità si è migliorata molto, ed adesso sto leggendo in italiano quasi alla stessa velocità come in inglese, ed è di rado che ho bisogno di cercare in dizionario per i significati delle parole.

Comunque, sebbene io riconosca sempre più parole quando le vedo sulla pagina, il mio vocabolario non si è migliorato molto in fondo.

Di solito quando sento una delle mie nuove parole italiane parlata (per esempio sulla radio) posso riconoscerla, e posso ricordare il significato, ma questa non è vera quando sto provando a ricordare una parola cominciare dal zero, per esempio quando sto parlando o scrivendo in italiano. Senza le parole italiane davanti a me (preferibilmente con un po’ di contesto per illustrare il significato) posso raremente ricordare le parole giuste. È come se le parole sono state aspirate in un grande buco nero, di essere viste mai più!

Userò il verbo ‘trattenersi’ per illustrare il mio argomento. Quando vedo questa parola in un libro posso capire dal contesto il significato, ma quando sto parlando italiano, e voglio dire qualcosa come: “Ah si, questo tizio mi è fatto molto arrabiata! Mi sono trattenuta perché non dire qualcosa a rimpiangere….” Non posso ricordare la parola che significa: trattenersi. Mi penso: ‘So che esiste un verbo che significa ‘trattenersi’, ma che cavalo è?” e la mente è totalmente vuota!

È molto frustrante e demoralizzante!

Ecco perchè questo fine settimana ho fatto la decisione a risolvere il problema! Ovviamente sto leggendo o ascoltando le parole, ma non le sto veramente imparando. Stanno entrando da un orecchio e uscendo dall’altro, e solo una in cinquanta si è appiccica nella mia memoria. Sembra che semplicemente leggere i libri e ascoltare i podcast non siano sufficienti per imparare le parole. Ho bisogno di impararle meccanicamente (una cosa che stavo sperando a evitare, perché ho voluto che il mio vocabolario migliori in modo organico, per osmosis!)

Scrivere le parole in un taccuino non è un buon metodo per me perché ho la curva d’attenzione di un moscerino, quindi ho provato a cercare un metodo più interessante. Ho trovato un sitoweb che si chiama WorkLifeStudy.com, che ha un’applicazione di cartellone dimostra. Si può scaricare quest’ applicazione per gratis sul iPod Touch o iPhone 3G. L’applicazione è facilissima a usare, ed è perfetta per gli studenti delle lingue. Si può creare sul mac o PC le proprie carte e scaricarle immediatemente sul Touch o iPhone, poi esaminarle quando si ha un po’ di tempo libero. Ho un grande arretrato delle parole di imparare, quindi ieri ho creato 28 gruppi di parole (ogni gruppo contiene 25 parole) e li ho scaricato sul mio iPhone, e la mia pianta è a imparare a fondo cinquanta parole ogni giorno, perché alla fine della quindicina conoscerò tutte le parole nel mio arretrato, e potrò ricominciare a leggere per generare nuove parole e espressioni.

Se si usa il font il più piccolo, c’è abbastanza spazio per circa 790 caratteri, quindi è possibile creare le carte con qualche frase per illustrare come le parole compaiono in contesto, o per importare le porzioni complete dal un testo. Per esempio, il sitoweb illustra come c’è il spazio sufficiente sul due lati di una singola carta per il testo completo di ‘Gettysburg Address’ di Lincoln! È molto imponente, vero?

Provo a usare le carte ripetutamente per una quindicina e vi darò una valutazione onesta del mio progresso…ma per giudicare delle prime impressioni, sembra un’applicazione molto utile!

Se non avete un iPhone o iPod Touch ci sono altre applicazioni simili per il computer. Una di questa si chiama Supermemo, e potete leggere una recenzione qui. Sfortunatamente non posso usare quest'applicazione perchè non è compatibile con un Mac, ma sembra un buon prodotto.

Hi everyone! Sorry it's been a while since I posted to the blog, but I've been working crazy hours and also trying to prepare for my holiday...we head to Rome for 12 days on Sunday! Yay, can't wait! When I get back I intend to update the blog much more regularly, so be patient with me! In the meantime, I've just discovered the blogs of Pino Scaccia....they're fabulous! I especially like the Diary from Kabul one (probably because I've just finished reading 'The Kite Runner' in Italian, so I'm fascinated with Afghanistan at the moment!). I think quality blogs like Pino's can really be useful to students of Italian!

Quando torno a casa, è la mia intenzione fare l'update più frequentemente, quindi dovete essere pazienti con me! Nel frattempo, ho scoperto i blog di Pino Scaccia - sono favolosi! Mi piace soprattutto il Diario da Kabul (probabilmente perché ho appena finito di leggere il libro 'Il cacciatore di aquiloni' in italiano, e comunque sono affascinata dall'Afganistan al momento!) Credo che i blog di ottima qualità come questi di Pino possano essere molto utili per gli studenti d'italiano!

A polemic is always more powerful, in my opinion, when it's presented with humour, which is why I love the video The Story of Stuff, by Annie Leonard. After watching this video, I no longer felt so ashamed and unhip to be wearing the same boots and jeans as I wore last Autumn, and I felt pretty damn proud of myself for the fact that I've owned the same mobile phone for two years and the same microwave since my student days 25 years ago! Though, ahem, I glossed over the disconcerting truths of my shiny new iMac and my even shinier new Fiat 500...because they were both essential purchases, right? Anyway, here's the video, and immediately afterwards is the same video dubbed into Italian...

Una polemica, secondo me, è sempre più potente quando si è presentata con umore, il che spiega perché mi piace tanto il video La storia delle cose, di Annie Leonard. Dopo guardando questo video, non mi sono sentita più vergogna e fuori moda per vestirmi negli stessi stivali e gli stessi jeans i quali mi sono vestita l'autunno scorso ed, infatto, mi sono sentita orgogliosa del fatto che ha posseduto da due anni lo stesso cellulare, e lo stesso forno a microonde da i miei giorni come una studentessa, venticinque anni fa! Gomorrah

Yesterday I saw the film Gomorrah, directed by Matteo Garrone and based on Roberto Saviano’s book. It was very different from any other Italian film that I’d ever seen, and certainly it wasn’t a pleasant film to watch, but nevertheless it was really interesting and informative.

First of all, it was almost impossible for me to follow the dialogue in Italian. Thank goodness for subtitles! Because the Neapolitan dialect was so strong, there were only two or three instances in which I could follow the flow of the conversations. I read that even in Italy the film was released with subtitles, and while I’m not sure whether that’s actually true or not, I certainly wouldn’t be surprised! It was difficult for me even to recognize the language as Italian!

The film shows a side to Italian life that as a tourist I’ve (thankfully!) never seen. It’s a life that I catch glimpses of between the pages of the newspapers, when I read stories about gangland killings or the trash crisis in Naples etc. But on my actual visits to Italy, I've never seen anything of this. Everything's hidden from the eyes of the tourists, and Garrone opens one's eyes to the hidden realities.

Above all, it was the film's visual imagery that struck me the most. The filthy tenements, the squalor, the absence of hope in the eyes of the inhabitants, the drums of toxic waste, the peaches in the ditch. It seemed to me that those peaches were a metaphor for the people, poisoned by the casual contempt of the Camorra for their own land and their own people. It was a really depressing conclusion to reach!

The total disregard for human dignity was so shocking! Whilst I was watching the scenes about the toxic waste, I was recalling this podcast from Beppe Grillo’s blog, and I felt a huge sense of outrage, because there are so many innocent people suffering simply because of greed. Filthy lucre! How I wish the film was a work of fiction, but unfortunately everything’s true.

I believe I heard somewhere that many Italians think that their dirty linen shouldn’t be washed in public, and certainly films of this sort don’t give a very good impression of the ‘bel paese’. But every country has its underbelly, and I’m sure that in England too we have people like Totò, Don Ciro, Marco and Ciro, Pasquale and the hugely cynical Franco.

Every country has people like these.

Unfortunately.

Ieri ho visto il film ‘Gomorra’ di Matteo Garrone, basato sul libro di Roberto Saviano…era molto diverso da tutti gli altri film Italiani che abbia mai visto, e certamente non era un film piacevole a vedere, ma tuttavia era tanto interessante e istruttivo.

Innanzitutto, per me era quasi impossibile seguire il dialogo in Italiano. Grazie al cielo per i sottotitoli! C’erano solo due, tre instanze in cui potevo capire le conversazioni, perché il dialetto napoletano era molto forte. Ho letto che anche in Italia c’era una bisogna per i sottotitoli, e benché non sia sicura se questa è vero o no, non sarei sorpresa! Era difficile per me anche riconsocere la lingua come italiana!

Il film mostra un lato della vita italiana che non abbia mai visto (fortunatamente!) come turista. È una vita che intravedo tra le pagine dei giornali, quando leggo delle uccisioni malavite, o della emergenza rifiuti a Napoli ecc. Ma quando sono andata in Italia, non ho vista niente di questa roba. Tutto è nascosto della vista delle turiste, e Garrone apre gli occhi alle realtà nascoste.

Soprattutto era le immagini visuali del fil che mi hanno colpito il più. I sporchi casamenti, il squallore, l’assenza della speranza negli occhi degli abitanti, i barili di rifiuti tossici, le pesce nel fossato. Mi sembra che le pesce siano una metafora per la gente, avvelena del disprezzo casuale della camorra per la propria terra e la propria gente. Era una conclusione molto deprimente.

La mancanza di considerazione totale per la dignità umana era tantissimo scioccante. Mentre guardavo le scene riguardo ai rifuiti tossici, mi ricordavo questa podcast sul blog di Beppe Grillo, e ho sentito un grand senso d’oltraggio, perché molte persone innocenti stanno soffrendo a causa dell’avidità. I soldi sporchi! Spero davvero che Il film fosse un’opera narrativa, ma sfortunatamente tutto è vero.

Credo di aver sentito che molti italiani credono che i panni sporchi non debbano essere lavati in pubblico, e certamente i film di questo tipo non danno un buon’ impressione del bel paese! Ma ogni paese ha il proprio lato oscuro, e sono sicura che anche in Inghilterra ci sono le persone come Totò, Don Ciro, Marco e Ciro, Pasquale e il cinicissimo Franco.

Ogni paese ha la gente come questa.

Purtroppo.

If I had to choose the one site that has helped me with my Italian more than any other, it would have to be Word Reference.com.

This site is quite simply priceless. I don’t know how I would ever manage without it! It doesn’t matter whether your question is simple or erudite – if you can’t find what you’re looking for in the language databases, you simply post your question on the appropriate message board and someone will always come up with the right answer, and usually in lightning-quick time. The responses are of a fabulously high quality, and because you’re interacting with real people, if you don’t fully understand the answers you can simply ask for further clarification, or ask follow-up questions.

There is an Italian Only forum, an English Only forum, and an Italian-English forum (the latter being the place where I squander hours of precious leisure time every week browsing through all the threads – it can be a little addictive!) If you haven’t visited this site before, I really recommend that you check it out!

Il sito è veramente inestimabile. Senza il sito, non so come ce lo farei! Non importa se la questione è semplice o erudite – se non si può trovare la soluzione nei database delle lingue, si può semplicemente postare la questione sulla bacheca appropriata, e qualcuno ti darà sempre la risposta giusta, e di solito alla velocità della luce. Le risposte sono di una qualità incredibilmente alta, e perché stiate sempre interagendo con la genta reale, se non capite completamente le risposte, potete semplicemente chiedere a qualcuno per più chiarimento, o fare più domande.

C’e un foro Solo Italiano, un altro Solo Inglese, ed un terzo Inglese-Italiano (il terzo essendo il luogo dove spreco ore del mio tempo libero prezioso ogni settimana – può dare assuefazione!) Se non avete già visto questo sito, ti raccomando a fare una visita!

Animulae, le toscane profumano di limoni

I’ve searched high and low, but I haven’t yet come across any English production to match G.L Tannamori’s ‘ANIMULAE, le toscane profumano di limoni’.

An Italian friend told me about this audio/video/pdf production a few months ago, and I downloaded it from iTunes. You can get to grips with this book in 3 ways:
1) You can simply read the text in PDF format (but that’s a bit boring, right?);
2) You can listen to the audiobook (better, but still a little humdrum); or
3) You can watch the audiovideo which combines (as you might guess!) audio and video – the video being the animated text of the book.

The audiovideo in particular is really fantastic, and wonderful for students of Italian! Given that the book is narrated at a breakneck pace by a fabulously evocative reader called Ludovica Modugno, the animated text is a godsend, turning a tsunami of Italian into an enjoyable listening experience.

I truly love this book, and I really wish there was an equivalent English book that I could recommend to my Italian readers. I’ll keep looking, but if anyone out there knows the existence of such a production, I’d love to hear about it!

Ho cercato per mari e monti , ma non ho ancora trovato una produzione inglese per uguagliare ‘ANIMULAE, le toscane profumano di limoni’, di G.L Tannamori.

Un amico italiano mi ha detto di questa produzione audio/video/pdf pochi mesi fa, e ho fatto il download di iTunes. Si può leggere questo libro nel tre modi:
1) Si può semplicemente leggere il testo in formato pdf (ma questo è un po’ noioso, vero?);
2) Si può ascoltare all’audiolibro (migliore, ma ancora un po’ tedioso); o
3) Si può guardare l’audiovideo, che unire (come si può indovinare!) audio e video – il secondo essendo il testo animato del libro.

L’audiovideo in particolare è veramente favoloso, e meraviglioso per gli studenti d’italiano! Dato che il libro è narrato a rotto di collo di una lettrice evocativa meravigliosamente che si chiama Ludovica Modugno, il testo animato è un vero e proprio dono di Dio, che trasforma un tsunami d’italiano in un'esperienza di ascolto piacevole.

Adoro veramente questo libro, e spero che fosse anche un libro inglese simile che potrei raccomandare ai miei lettori Italiani. Continuerò cercare, ma se qualcuno conosce l’esistenza di una produzione così, mi piacerebbe tanto di sapere!

Do you see the link over there on the right to a site called WordChamp? Well, it’s a pretty cool site if you like to read a lot of foreign language newspapers or websites, but don’t want to keep flipping backwards and forwards to a bilingual dictionary.

You just tell Wordchamp what language you’ll be reading, choose a language for definitions (this would ordinarily be your native language), type in a web address and get started!

Now when you’re reading your online foreign newspaper or website, if you don’t understand a word you just hover over it with your mouse and Wordchamp will give you its definition. The definitions have audio files attached to them so that you can check the pronunciation of the word, and you can click on the definition to add the word to your ‘practice list’. If you create a free account, you can even add your own definitions if there isn’t one already available, or you can edit the existing definitions if you think they’re wrong. So you can also play a small part in helping others!

Pretty cool, huh?

Vedete quel link a destra per un sito si chiama WordChamp? Allora, è un bel sito se (come me), vi piace leggere molti giornali o siti stranieri, ma non volete sempre controllare le parole nel dizionario bilingue.

Semplicemente si dice a Wordchamp che lingua si userà, si sceglie un’ altra lingua per le definizioni (di solito la lingua nativa), si aggiunge l’indirizzo di un sito, e si comincia!

Ora, quando leggete un giornale o sito straniere online, se non capite una parola, passateci su con il puntatore, e Wordchamp vi darà la definizione. Le definizioni hanno le registrazioni audio allegate per permettervi a controllare la pronuncia delle parole, e potete cliccare sulla definizione per aggiungerla al vostro ‘practice list’. Se vi iscrivete gratis sul sito, potete anche aggiungere la vostra propria definizione se una non c’è ancora disponibile, o far la revisione delle definizioni esistenti se credete che siano sbagliate. In questo modo, potete anche rappresentare una parte in auitando altre persone!

If I ever want to know how an Italian word should be pronounced, I go to the DOP (Dizionario italiano multimediale e multilingue d’Ortografia e di Pronunzia), which is a FABULOUS resource for Italian language students. I can’t praise this site highly enough, and using it can become almost addictive. It’s hard to believe that a site of such excellent quality is available as a free resource on the Internet. Well done, Italy!

So is there a free resource of the equivalent high quality for students of English?

Well…not exactly…

Students of English can learn American English pronunciation by using The Free Dictionary, which gives unfailingly accurate and authentic American pronunciations. It also gives the equivalent British English pronunciation, but in my opinion these files are less accurate and of a poorer quality than the American ones. In fact, some of the British pronunciations are downright weird and unnatural!

If you really want to learn how to speak British English the best resource is The Cambridge Dictionaries Online Extra site. This site isn’t free (individuals must pay £8.50 or around €11 for a year’s subscription) but overall it’s an excellent resource, giving accurate pronunciations of every word in both British and American English, as well as giving language students a veritable smorgasbord of other learning tools. In my opinion, it’s easily worth the annual subscription.

Another subscription-only resource that is particularly good for right-brain people who like mind-maps and visuals is The Visual Thesaurus. This is a bilingual resource that costs $19.95 or around €14.50 for an annual subscription. It wouldn’t be my first choice for a bilingual thesaurus, but for all you right-brainers out there it could be a Godsend!

Se voglio sapere come pronunciare una parola italiana, vado al sito DOP (Dizionario italiano multimediale e multilingue d’Ortografia e di Pronunzia), che è una risorsa FAVOLOSA per gli studenti stranieri. Gli studenti stranieri possono imparare la pronuncia Americana usare The Free Dictionary, che offre le pronuncie Americane autentiche e infallibilmente accurate. Offre anche la pronuncia inglese equivalente, ma secondo me questi fili sono meno accurati e di un peggior qualità delle registrazioni americane. Infatti, alcune delle pronuncie inglesi sono veramente strane ed innaturali!

Se si vuole veramente imparare la pronuncia inglese, l’ottima risorsa è il sito Cambridge Dictionaries Online Extra. Questo sito non è gratis (gli individuali devono pagare un abbonamento annuale di £8.50 o circa €11) ma complessivamente è una risorsa eccellente, che offre gli studenti un vero e proprio smorgasbord degli strumenti d’apprendimento. Gli audiolibri (di nuovo!)

The last time I visited Rome, I dragged my poor husband around dozens of bookshops trying to find unabridged audio books read in Italian. Finally I found a copy of an Il Narratore recording of Oscar Wilde’s The Portrait of Dorian Gray, and I bought it for around €30. When I got back to England I found the same book in a download version here for only €14.99!

Apparently audiobooks haven’t really caught on in Italy in the same way that they have here in England.

We English are really lucky (and by extension, so are students of English!) because there is a huge range of audio books available in England. You can borrow them in CD format for a minuscule sum from every library, and most bookshops carry an extensive range.

Most of the audio books available in bookshops are an abridged version, which in my opinion is not as useful (especially to English students) as a recording of the complete text. With an unabridged recording, a language student can listen to the recording whilst reading the text at the same time, something that’s difficult to do with an abridged version.

If, like me, you like listening to audio books on your MP3 player, Audible.com has a huge range of reasonably priced unabridged audio books of excellent quality, some of which are read by the author (my favourite kind!). Unfortunately, the files are DRM protected so you can’t (easily) back them up or convert them into other formats. However, if you Google ‘breaking audible protection’ you’ should find some good work-arounds to solve this problem.

And if you want free audiobooks? Well, again, there are loads available on the internet, so it’s a good idea to visit a portal such as Internet Archive and find out what’s available. The quality of some of the free recordings is pretty poor (but hey, they’re free so what do you expect?!), but if you hunt around you can find some top-quality recordings such as this one of George Orwell's 1984.

L’ultima volta che sono andata a Roma, ho trascinato a zonzo mio povero marito nelle dozzine delle librerie cercando gli audiolibri integrali italiani. Alla fine ho trovato una copia di una registrazione del Narratore di 'Il Ritratto di Dorian Gray' di Oscar Wilde, e l’ho comprato per circa €30. Quando sono tornata in Inghilterra ho trovato lo stesso libro nella versione MP3 qui per solo €14.99!

Noi inglesi sono tanto fortunati (e, alla stessa stregua, anche gli studenti stranieri) perché c’è un enorme assortimento di audiolibri accessibile in Inghilterra. Da ogni biblioteca si può prenderli a prestito nel formato CD per una somma minuscola, e la maggior parte delle librerie ha una serie estesa.

La maggior parte dei libri disponibile nelle librerie è in una versione ridotta e, secondo me, questa non è così utile come la versione completa (soprattutto per gli studenti stranieri). Con una registrazione integrale, uno studente può ascoltare e leggere allo stesso tempo, il quale è difficile fare con una versione ridotta.

Se, come io, vi piace ascoltare gli audiolibri sul lettore di MP3, il sito Audible.com ha una selezione vasta di audiolibri integrali per un prezzo ragionevole, di una qualità eccellente. Alcuni sono lettura del autore (il mio tipo preferito). Sfortunatamento, i file sono DRM-Protected, quindi non si può (facilmente) fare una copia di salvataggio o convertirli in altri formati. Comunque, se si Googla ‘breaking audible protection’, si può trovare qualche soluzione.

E se vi piacerebbe avere gli audiolibri gratis? I'm a huge Beppe Grillo fan, but since he placed this entry on his Blog I've been even more of an admirer! The plight of animals is so often swept under the carpet, and so many animals are suffering and dying under the enormous weight of human apathy, greed and cruelty. There are some really dedicated individuals who are trying to make a difference (people like Jill Robinson with Moon Bears, and Lone Dröscher Nielsen with orangutans), but sometimes their efforts seem doomed to failure when the abuse is so entrenched!

Beppe's post is also available on his blog in English, so there's no excuse not to read it and get very, very angry!

Sono una grande tifosa di Beppe Grillo, ma da quando ho letto questo post nel suo blog, sono stata anche più di un'ammiratore! La triste condizione degli animali è troppo spesso spazzato sotto il tapetto, e tanti animali sono soffrendi e morenti sotto il peso enorme della crueltà, avidità ed apathia umana. Ci sono alcune persone molto dedicate che stanno provando a fare una differenza (persone come Jill Robinson con gli orsi della luna, e Lone Dröscher Nielsen con gli orangotanghi), ma qualche volta i loro sforzi sembrano essere destinati a fallire quando il maltrattamento è così radicato!

Il post di Beppe è anche disponibile in inglese, quindi non c'è una scusa giusta per non leggerlo e non diventare molto, molto adirato!

Hi everyone, I’m really excited today because I took delivery of my new car, a Fiat 500! Here are a couple of photos – it’s pretty cool, huh? Much to my husband’s disgust I’ve called it Valentino... he says that naming a car is such a girly thing to do…but people do it all the time with boats, so why should cars be any different? I’m driving it to Donington Park at the weekend to watch the Motocross de Nations, where it’ll probably get bogged down in the mud and will need to be towed out of the mire by a tractor! I’ll be cheering on the English guys Tommy Searle, Billy MacKenzie and Shaun Simpson (of course) as well as David Philippaerts, Manuel Monni and Alex Salvani… it should be a great day! It’s just a pity that Tony Cairoli is still injured!

Online Italian cookery

I love Italian food, but living in England I’m never sure whether the food that is served in Italian restaurants is really authentic, or a bastardized English version of the real thing. Certainly it never seems to taste the same as the food that I eat when I’m actually in Italy! I have a couple of good Italian cookbooks (my favourites are Giorgio Locatelli’s Made In Italy and The Silver Spoon), but I was still delighted to stumble across an online Italian TV cookery channel called Italian Food Net , where the dishes are produced by a (very handsome!) Italian chef called Alessandro (and a less handsome but still talented chef called Luigi), and where one can listen to the Italian with English subtitles if you can’t understand all the words! It’s a great way to listen to spoken Italian and to improve one’s repertoire of Italian dishes at the same time. Fantastic!

Adoro la cucina italiana, ma visto che vivo in Inghilterra, non sono mai sicura che il cibo che sia servito nei ristoranti inglesi-italiani sia veramente autentico, o invece sia una versione imbastardita inglese del vero McCoy. Certamente, il cibo non sembra abbia lo stesso sapore come il quale che mangio quando vado in Italia! Ho qualche buon libro di cucina italiano (I miei preferiti sono Fatto in Italia di Giorgio Locatelli e Il cucchiaio argento), ma sono stata ancora molto contenta quando mi sono imbattuta in un canale cucino italiano online, titolato Italian Food Net , dove i piatti sono cucinati di un (bellissimo!) cuoco italiano che si chiama Alessandro (e un cuoco meno bello ma nondimeno dotato di talento, si chiama Luigi), e dove si può ascoltare l’italiano con i sottotitoli inglesi se non si può capire tutte le parole. È un buon modo per ascoltare l’italiano parlato e per migliorare il proprio repertorio della cucina italiana allo stesso tempo! Meraviglioso!

Torta di merli

One of my favourite authors is the late Raymond Carver, so I was thrilled to find a copy of one of his stories on the bilingual site ERCOLE GUIDI. The story is ‘Blackbird Pie’, and like all of Carver’s stories, it is deceptively simple, and utterly brilliant.

Incidentally, I have a copy of myself reading the English version of the story, if anyone is desperate to hear the story read by an English native speaker. It’s not the best of recordings (you can hear the TV faintly in the background!) but it’s not terrible either.

Anyway, the last time I visited Rome, I bought his collection of stories ‘CATHEDRAL’ in Italian - I also have the book in ENGLISH, and it’s fascinating to read the two versions side by side! Highly recommended!

Uno dei miei autori preferiti è il fu Raymond Carver, quindi sono stata molto contenta quando ho trovato una delle sue storie sul sito bilingue ERCOLE GUIDI. Il racconto è ‘Torta di merli” e, come tutte le storie di Carver, è ingannevolmente semplice e sinceramente eccezionale!

A proposito, ho una registrazione di me stessa leggendo ad alta voce questa storia in versione inglese, se qualcuno è disperato ad ascoltare il racconto letto di un madrelingua. Non è la miglior registrazione (si può sentire leggermente il televisore di sottofondo!), ma neppure è terribile.

Comunque, l’ultima volta che ho fatto una visita a Roma, ho comprato la sua collezione delle storie ‘CATTEDRALE’ in italiano. Ho anche il libro in INGLESE, ed è affascinante a leggere i due libri fianco a fianco. Fortamente raccomandato!

The Little Prince

I'm making lots of errors in my Italian...please be patient with me!

I started teaching myself Italian in May 2007, and the first book I attempted to read, after a couple of months of study, was the monologue 'Novecentro' by Alessandro Baricco. This is a good book, which has been made into a great film called ‘The Legend of 1900’ starring Tim Roth [also available in an Italian version called ‘La leggenda del pianista sull'oceano’ which is available on DVD in Italy in a dual layer version, thus enabling viewers to watch it either in Italian or English and with or without Italian or English subtitles].

But, anyway, I digress….

Novecento, though a great book, was not a good choice for my first ever Italian language book. I had to look practically every other word up in the dictionary, and some of the sentence constructions were simply too complicated for me to deconstruct and understand. I felt discouraged and stupid…

Then a friend suggested that I should cut myself some slack, and read a children’s book instead, arguing that a book designed for children would have simpler language and a less complex structure.

So my second foray into the world of Italian books was the children’s story 'The Little Prince', by Antoine de Saint Exupéry. This was my favourite book as a child, and so I knew it inside out and back to front. I found online copies of the book in English HERE and Italian HERE which allowed me to read the two texts side by side.

The same friend also sent me an absolutely enchanting Italian audiobook adaption of the story, which I don’t believe is widely available. If anyone wants to know more about this audio book they should drop me an email.

Sto facendo molti errori col mio italiano. Vi prego di essere pazienti con me!

Ho cominciato ad imparare l’italiano da solo in maggio 2007, ed il primo libro che ho tentato di leggere, dopo due mesi dello studio, era il monologo ‘Novecento’ di Alessandro Baricco. Questo è un buon libro, il quale è anche adattato in un film, ‘The Legend of 1900’ con Tim Roth [in vendita anche in Italia, intitolato ‘La leggenda del pianista sull'oceano’, che permette gli italiani a vederlo sia in italiano sia in inglese, e con o senza i sottotitoli inglesi o italiani].

Però, faccio digressioni!

‘Novecento’, anche se sia un libro buonissimo, non era una buona scelta per il mio primo libro italiano. È stato necessario per me di cercare quasi ogni parola nel dizionario, e alcune costruzioni linguistiche sono state semplicemente troppo complicate per me a smantellare e capire. Ho sentito un po’ scoraggiata e scema.

Poi un amico mi ha consigliato a leggere un libro scritto per i bambini, perchè un libro così avrebbe un linguaggio ed una struttura meno complessi.

Quindi, per il mio secondo tentativo nel campo dei libri italiani, ho letto la storia di ‘Il piccolo principe’ di Antoine de Saint Exupéry. Questo era il mio libro preferito da ragazza, e lo conosco a fondo. Ho trovato due coppie ‘online’, in inglese QUI ed in iItaliano QUI, che mi hanno permesso a leggere i testi fianco a fianco.

Lo stesso amico mi ha anche mandato un audiolibro veramente incantevole di questa storia, il quale non credo che sia largamente disponibile. Se vi piacerebbero più informazioni di questo audiolibro, mandatemi un email.

Shhh...don't tell my husband, but I think there's something indefinably sexy about Marco Travaglio! Of course I listen to Passaparola every week primarily to practice listening to Italian spoken at a normal pace and to learn really interesting things about the social and political situation in Italy, but the fact that this show is presented by the lovely Marco is a real bonus! I'm sure that's very shallow of me! Anyway...the podcasts are great for Italian students because a) they're a fantastic way to learn about some controversial Italian current affairs and b) every podcast is subtitled in Italian, with the script also available to read on the website.

Buongiorno a tutti. Questo "Passaparola" è dedicato ad Abdul, aveva 19 anni, era cittadino italiano ma era nato nel Burkina Faso. Era a Milano con la sua famiglia. L'hanno massacrato di botte gridandogli "muori sporco negro" alcuni italioti padani, due giorni fa, sospettandolo di aver rubato alcuni biscotti in un bar. Non mi pare di aver sentito nessuno invocare sicurezza: di solito quando si verifica un delitto a parti invertite si invoca sicurezza, tolleranza zero, rastrellamenti in certi ambienti.

I love youTube, and have even found it useful in my Italian studies, as the site hosts some great Italian videos. It's a great way to pick up some new vocabulary...and to learn some useful hand gestures!

Help a bald brother out!

It takes a seriously funny comedian to make an amusing and thought-provoking cancer ad, but that's just what Larry David has pulled off in this video. I liked it so much that I've transcribed it for any Italians who may have trouble grasping all of the words:

Hello, I’m Larry David, and I know what you’re thinking: ‘Hey, it’s Larry David, I bet he’s going to say something funny.’ Or ‘There’s Larry David, funny, funny guy.’ Or ‘Larry David is, in addition to being one of the pre-eminent social satirists of this, or any other, era, also uncannily brilliant and should strongly consider a run for public office’.

Thank you, that’s very sweet of you. But today I’m not here to say anything funny. Today I’d like to talk to you about something serious. I’d like to talk to you about …cancer.

Not so funny now, am I?

Cancer comes in many forms, and has many victims. I should know, for I am one. Now, I should clarify that I do not have cancer, but that does not mean that I have not suffered because of it.

Let me explain.

As you may have noticed, I am a bald man. A proud, naturally bald man. And as a man so afflicted, I should be entitled to sympathy, and the trappings that come along with that sympathy. A caring glance here and there, perhaps a free meal, and, once in a blue moon, some sympathy sex.

But do I get any of these? I do not. Because cancer patients, and their chemo-induced baldness, have stolen the sympathy that is rightfully mine. You see, cancer-bald is the badge of courage and honour, while bald-bald has simply become genetically defective. The chemo-bald Johnny-come-latelys have created a gutter class of the naturally bald, horned in on our gravy train and cast us out like common circus freaks. This must be stopped, must I say!

So what’s a bald man to do? Well, we are faced with two choices. Either we even the playing field by getting cancer ourselves, or we organise a worldwide effort to wipe cancer from the face of the planet, restoring the natural order and returning pathetic-ness, and sympathy sex, to their rightful owner – the naturally bald man.

I must be honest. Cancer doesn’t really look like that much fun. I vote we cure it. Help a bald brother out, would you? And maybe next year we’ll go after alopecia.

Se questo è un uomo

I’m trying to read more books written in Italian, and the one that I’m reading at the moment is Primo Levi’s ‘If this is a man’. Luckily for me the language is simple and uncomplicated so I’m able to read it for the most part without a dictionary (and it helps that I also read the book many years ago in an English translation). However, for any English students of Italian who don’t feel quite up to the task of reading the whole text in its original Italian, I’d encourage you to go to your local library and to find a copy of Lucie Benchouiha’s: Primo Levi, Rewriting the Holocaust.

This book is crammed with extracts from Levi’s writings in the original Italian, but each extract is immediately translated into English, so that the reader can check his understanding of what he’s just read.

Books like this are a great bridge for language students, helping them to read more of their target language but in an unchallenging and supportive context.

Sto provando a leggere più libri scritti in Italiano, e l’uno che sto leggendo al momento è ‘Se questo è un uomo’ di Primo Levi. Per fortuna, il linguaggio di questo libro è semplice e non complicato, perciò sono in grado di leggerlo per la maggiore parte senza un dizionario (e per me è anche utile che molti anni fa ne ho letto una traduzione inglese). Però, incorraggerei le persone inglesi che non si sentano essere all'altezza del compito di leggere il testo completo nella lingua originale a fare una visità alla biblioteca per trovare una copia del libro: Primo Levi, Rewriting the Holocaust, di Lucie Benchouiha.

Questo libro è stipato con estratti dagli scritti di Levi nella lingua originale, ma ogni estratto è tradotto immediatamente in inglese, per permettere il lettore a verificare la sua comprensione.

Food for Thought

I read THIS POST IN DEIRDRÉ STRAUGHAN'S BLOG and it gave me much food for thought.

As an English native speaker, I can use my own language without any conscious effort or thought. I know how to construct sentences and string them together so that they sound natural and unobtrusive, with a fluid cadence and harmonious structure. I use my familiarity with my own language to sift intuitively through all the possible ways to say something, choosing the words that sound 'right' and apposite. I rarely give a conscious thought to the process, except when I'm actually writing fiction. I simply sit down at the keyboard or open my mouth, and the words are there.

To achieve this effortless facility with the target language is the holy grail for all foreign-language students, and it's probably the hardest part of language learning. How does one learn to use the foreign language naturally, as a native speaker would? I guess it takes hours and hours of talking and listening to native speakers, hundreds of hours of reading books and newspaper articles.

I contribute to the blog ITALIAN TRANSLATION PRACTICE, and I find it considerably easier to translate into English than from English into Italian. This is because I still don't really know how Italian should sound. I haven't yet internalised the rhythms and cadences of the language, and so I try to shoe-horn the Italian into my familiar English framework, which is akin to trying to cram a square peg into a round hole.

At the moment, given all my errors, I'd be contented to speak, like Deirdré, "un italiano corretto, ma inglesissimo", but in time I'd like to speak/write "un italiano naturale". Do you think it's possible?

Ho letto QUESTA POSTA NEL BLOG DI DEIRDRÉ STRAUGHAN e mi ha dato molto cibo per la mente.

Come una madrelingua inglese, posso usare la mia propria lingua senza qualche sforzo o pensiero conscio. So come costruire le frasi e connetterle per riuscire un suono naturale e incospicuo, con una cadenza fluida ed una struttura armoniosa. Uso la mia familiarità colla mia propria lingua per passare al setaccio tutti i mezzi possibili per dire qualcosa, scegliere le parole che sembrano ‘giuste’ o apposite. É raro che io pensi al processo, tranne che io stia scrivendo attivamente la narrativa. Mi siedo alla tastiera o apro la bocca, e tutte le parole sono presenti.

Raggiungere questa facilità spontanea colla lingua d’arrivo è il sacro graal per tutti gli studenti di lingua straniera, ed è probabile che sia la cosa più difficile dello studio delle lingue straniere. Come si può usare la lingua straniera in modo naturale, come una madrelingua? Credo che ci sia una bisogna per tante ore parlando e ascoltando colle madrelingua, e centinaia di ore leggendo i libri e gli articoli.

Io faccio le contribuzioni al blog ITALIAN TRANSLATION PRACTICE, e trovo la traduzione nel inglese molto più facile della traduzione dal inglese nel italiano. Questa è perché non so ancora come l’italiano dovrebbe suonare. Non ho ancora interiorizzato i ritmi e le cadenze della lingua, e quindo provo a stipare l’italiano nell’ambito del inglese familiare, che è simile ad ammassare un piolo nel un buco per cui non è tagliato.

Al momento, in considerazione di tutti i miei errori, sarei contenta di parlare, come Dierdré, "un italiano corretto, ma inglesissimo", ma eventualmente mi piacerebbe parlare e scrivere "un italiano naturale". Credete che sia possibile?

Italians learning English have had a treat this summer...free audiobooks to listen to or download from the LA REPUBBLICA or L'ESPRESSO websites, with the accompanying english text available to purchase for only €2, each fully annotated with explanations of difficult English expressions.

Bilingual newspaper articles

Hi everyone,

Reading newspaper articles is one of the best ways to learn a language, as the vocabulary and style of newspaper articles are by their very nature contemporary and informal.

It's difficult to find dual-language online newspaper articles though, so I was really pleased when I came across the English section of CORRIERE DELLA SERA. Each article is written in English, but at the foot of each article is a link to the same article in its original Italian! So now I can read the article in Italian first, then check the accuracy of my comprehension by reading it afterwards in its English version. Pretty cool, huh?

Leggere gli articoli nei giornali è uno dei migliori modi per imparare una lingua, perché il vocabolario ed il stile dei articoli sono per natura contemporanei ed informali.

Comunque, è difficile trovare bilingue articoli, perciò sono stata molto lieta quando ho trovato la sezione inglese diCORRIERE DELLA SERA. Ogni articolo è scritto in inglese, ma ai piedi di ogni articolo c'è un collegamento allo stesso articolo nel italiano originale! Allora, ora posso leggere l'articolo primo di tutto in Italiano, pui posso verificare la precisione della mia comprensione per leggere l'articolo subito dopo nella versione inglese. Fantastico, vero?!

I love ska music, and Stiliti are one of my favourite bands. Some of their songs have English lyrics and some have Italian lyrics...and since the Italian is often sung at a frenetic pace, it's a good way of attuning your ears to rapid Italian. Just in case you can't make out all the lyrics simply through listening to the song, here are the lyrics so that you can sing along!

Adoro la musica ska, e Stiliti è uno del mio gruppo preferito. Qualche della loro canzone avevano il testo inglese, ed altre avevano il testo italiano....e perché spesso l'italiano è cantato ad un ritmo frenetico, è un buon modo in cui sinonizzare gli orecchi con l'italiano che scorre velocemente. Casomai non potete capire tutte le parole semplicemente per ascoltare la canzone, eccolo il testo per permettervi di cantare insieme col gruppo!

Hi guys, and welcome! This is just my first 'saying hi' post. I'm not sure yet what I intend to use this blog for, or what I intend to say, but I'll probably use it to practice my Italian translations and to comment upon anything Italiany that catches my eye or that I think will be interesting or helpful to English speakers learning Italian (and vice versa!)

Many of the links and posts will hopefully be interesting to other English speakers who are studying Italian, but I'll also try to make the site helpful and interesting to Italians who are studying English.

Also, if any Italians need any help with their English I'm always happy to help! Feel free to ask me anything you want!

I believe I make lots of mistakes with my Italian, and I'm hoping that you'll write to me or post comments correcting all of my clangers! Thanks a lot! Every post will be written in both English and Italian, so I hope the bad Italian isn't too jarring for my Italian visitors! You need to be patient with me!

Ciao, ragazzi, e benvenuti! Questo è solo la mia prima 'Dicendo ciao' posta. Non sono ancora sicura per qualcosa intendo usare questo blog, o cosa intendo dire, ma probabilmente lo userò per esercitare le mie traduzioni italiane e per commentare sulle cose italiane che mi attirano o che penso che siano interessanti per le madrelingua inglesi che stanno imparando italiano (e vice versa!)

Spero che molti dei collegamenti e le poste siano interessanti per altre madrelingua inglesi che stanno imparando italiano, ma proverò a creare uno sito interessante e utile anche per gli italiani che stanno imparando inglese.

Anche, se qualche persona hanno bisogno di aiuto col loro inglese, sono sempre contenta di essere di aiuto! Vi sentite liberi di fare le domande sul ogni argomento!
